Why One Little “e” Carries a World of History

Have you ever taken a closer look at the name SurinamStars? It sounds modern, ambitious and international. But did you know that behind the name lies a remarkable story of intuition, history and a little healthy stubbornness?

When founder Simone Spong came up with the name SurinamStars, people regularly told her she had made a mistake. “Shouldn’t it be SurinameStars, with an ‘e’?” or “Wouldn’t that sound much better?” But Simone stood her ground. She felt that Surinam, without the “e”, sounded far more international. And she was right: the name proved to be a perfect fit!

What Simone did not know at the time was that her instinctive choice connected her to a history stretching back to the seventeenth century.

The Days of “Surinam”

Before Suriname became an independent republic in 1975, the country was widely known internationally by its English spelling: Surinam. The British established the first permanent colony there in 1651. Although the Netherlands later exchanged New Amsterdam—present-day New York—for the territory, the English-speaking world continued to use the spelling without the “e”.

It was not until January 1978 that the Surinamese government formally asked the international community to use the spelling with an “e”. Long-established names, such as the national airline Surinam Airways, founded in 1953, still proudly carry that historic international spelling.

Staying the Course Towards Success

What others mistakenly saw as a spelling error was, in fact, a beautiful, unintentional nod to the country’s international past. By trusting her instincts, Simone created a brand name that sounds international and has deep historical roots.

It goes to show: sometimes you have to tune out the critics, chart your own course and think big. History will travel with you!
