The Emanuelson family excels across elite sports.
The Emanuelson Dynasty: From Paramaribo to the Olympic Qualifying Standard
While the Seedorf family focuses exclusively on football, the Emanuelson family excels across elite sports. Within this family, a father’s transatlantic dream has been passed down to his sons, bringing success in both international football and top-level athletics.
Generation 1: The Surinamese Pioneer
Errol Emanuelson (1953): Born in Paramaribo, he was a football hero in Suriname during the 1970s, playing for the legendary club SV Robinhood. He emigrated to Europe and played professionally in Belgium, carrying one powerful, clearly expressed ambition: his sons would reach the very top of their sport.
Generation 2: Success at the Highest Level
Urby Emanuelson (1986): Errol’s best-known son. He grew up in Amsterdam’s Bijlmer district, made an impressive 255 appearances for Ajax and won several trophies with the club. He then secured a dream move to AC Milan, where he played alongside Clarence Seedorf, and earned 17 caps for the Netherlands. Today, he works as a coach in Ajax’s youth academy.
Julian Emanuelson (1977): Urby’s older brother, who also came through the Ajax youth academy and played professional football for clubs including HFC Haarlem, as well as in Austria.
Jean-Paul Boëtius: A close relative—Errol’s nephew—who also reached the highest level, playing for Feyenoord and in Germany’s Bundesliga.
Generation 3: The Record-Breaking Athlete
Shaquille Emanuelson (2000): Julian’s son and Errol’s grandson. He chose athletics rather than football and has since become one of the Netherlands’ leading sportsmen. A multiple Dutch discus champion, Shaquille broke the legendary national record, which had stood for 34 years, with an impressive throw of 69.65 metres, propelling him into the world’s elite.
