Basketball excellence in Surinamese-Dutch history.

The name Chelius is forever synonymous with iron discipline, elite sports and basketball excellence in Surinamese-Dutch history. What began on the iconic Mr. Bronsplein in Paramaribo grew into a true sporting dynasty in Dutch basketball arenas.

The foundation was laid in a strict but close-knit family of thirteen children from Redi Doti, where hard work and punctuality were central values. Three brothers from this family firmly established their name in the world of sports:

Jozef “Jos” Chelius (1950–2025)

The undisputed driving force of the family and the “doyen of Surinamese basketball coaches.” He was named Basketball Player of the Year in Suriname in 1972 and 1975. He competed at the highest level in both Suriname, with De Arend, and the Netherlands, representing clubs including Hoofddorp, Early Bird and Landslake Lions. As a coach, he guided Early Bird to the Dutch Promotion Division in 1988. Shortly before his passing in July 2025, he documented his remarkable sporting journey in the unique publication Eens een sportman… altijd een sportman (Once an Athlete… Always an Athlete).

Hans and Reggie Chelius

Jos’s talented brothers. Together, they formed the sporting heart of clubs such as Landslake Lions in Landsmeer during the late 1970s and early 1980s. They also joined forces to help revive the legendary Amsterdam basketball club Early Bird.

The Second Generation: Guardians of the Legacy

While the first Chelius generation excelled on the basketball court, the second generation took on the essential responsibility of preserving this history for the future.

Andrea Chelius and her siblings

They were the quiet yet indispensable forces behind their father. Over several decades, Jos compiled folders filled with historical documents, rare photographs and unique newspaper clippings. His children meticulously categorized and digitized the entire archive.

Thanks to their unwavering organizational support, Jos’s biography was officially presented to the Surinamese Basketball Association (SBA) in 2016. Today, they continue to carry the torch with pride, keeping alive his sporting ideals of youth development, connection and community.
