Three Generations of Surinamese Excellence in Law and Media

The Roethof Dynasty: Three Generations of Surinamese Excellence in Law and Media

Welcome to SurinamStars! Today, we shine the spotlight on one of the most prominent and successful families of Surinamese descent in the Netherlands: the Roethof family. What began with a young pioneer from Paramaribo who fought his way into what was then an exclusively white-dominated profession has grown into an extraordinary dynasty within Dutch law and media. It is an inspiring story of perseverance, expertise and strong family ties.

Generation 1: The Founder and Pioneer

The foundation for this success was laid by Max Roël Roethof, LL.M. (1940–2023). Born in Paramaribo, he worked as a police officer in Suriname during his younger years. After moving to the Netherlands, he overcame numerous barriers and became one of the first Black lawyers to establish his own law firm in the early 1970s. With his exceptional command of case files and unwavering fighting spirit, family patriarch Max became a legend and an influential role model for many.

Generation 2: Passing the Torch in Law and Media

Max’s unstoppable ambition clearly runs through the veins of his children. They took the Roethof name to the highest levels of the Dutch legal profession and television industry.

Gerald Roethof. As one of the Netherlands’ most outspoken and media-savvy criminal defence lawyers, Gerald Roethof has become a familiar presence both in the courtroom and on television talk shows. With his razor-sharp arguments and fearless style, he represents defendants in some of the country’s largest and most complex criminal cases.

Machteld Roethof. A powerful woman and, to date, the only female lawyer within this branch of the family, Machteld Roethof successfully runs the original Roethof Advocaten law firm in Arnhem. Like her brother Gerald, she does not shy away from complex cases and is known for her extensive knowledge of case files and her empathy for society’s most vulnerable.

Mildred Roethof. Not dressed in a lawyer’s robe but armed with a camera, Mildred Roethof carved out her own place in the spotlight. As a renowned documentary filmmaker and television producer, she brings urgent social issues and Surinamese-Dutch stories to the screen. She beautifully captured the unique dynamics of her own family in the acclaimed documentary series De Verdedigers (The Defenders).

Maarten Ronald Roethof, MA, LL.M. (1966–2025) was an intellectual and athletic all-rounder within the renowned Roethof family. While his brother Gerald and sister Machteld entered the spotlight of criminal law, Ronald quietly excelled at the highest level in three entirely different disciplines: medicine, law and international draughts.

He also studied law and worked as a criminal defence lawyer within the family practice. His unique medical background enabled him to analyse medico-legal cases with exceptional precision.

On the draughts board, he was an extraordinary talent. As a young player, he won consecutive Surinamese national youth championships in 1983, 1984 and 1985. He made his mark internationally by finishing sixth at the World Youth Championship. As a Federation Master, he continued supporting the sport and served as the principal sponsor and organiser of the internationally recognised Roethof Open tournament.

Generation 3: The Future Is Secure

Grandfather Max’s legacy is in safe hands. The third generation is now proudly following in the family’s legal footsteps.

Jamil Roethof. As the son of Ronald Roethof and grandson of Max, Jamil Roethof, LL.M., officially continues the family tradition. Working at the law firm in Arnhem, he has specialised in criminal law and tenancy law. With the same characteristic Roethof determination, he demonstrates that the legal torch has been successfully passed to the next generation.

A family of whom we can be immensely proud. From Paramaribo to the highest courts and broadcasting organisations in the Netherlands, the Roethof family truly deserves its place among the SurinamStars!
