Famiri Breeveld - Belliot
Clarence Breeveld was a beloved Surinamese-Dutch singer, guitarist, composer and teacher. Through his kaseko, gospel and country music, he proudly promoted Surinamese culture. In recognition of his achievements, he was appointed Commander in the Honorary Order of the Yellow Star.
Hannah Belliot shared the stage with Clarence as the musical duo Hannah and Clarence. She later made her mark as a public administrator, chair of the Amsterdam-Zuidoost district and alderwoman of Amsterdam, where she was particularly committed to healthcare and culture.
Their son, Orville Breeveld, built upon this strong cultural foundation. As a guitarist, composer, bandleader and cultural organiser, he has been active in the international performing arts for more than 25 years. He has collaborated with renowned orchestras and organised over 150 cultural productions and festivals.
The third generation is represented by Desai Breeveld, better known as Ruskey. He is a producer, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and R&B artist. His creativity comes from both sides of his family. His mother, Glynis Terborg, is an actress, screenwriter, children’s author, theatre-maker and artist manager. Together with Desai, she co-wrote the children’s song Keti Koti for the Dutch educational television programme Het Klokhuis.
Glynis is also the daughter of the renowned actress, comedian and theatre-maker Jetty Mathurin. This means that Desai carries not only the musical legacy of the Breeveld family, but also the storytelling and theatrical talent of the Terborg-Mathurin family.
From Clarence and Hannah, through Orville and Glynis, to Desai: a remarkable blend of music, theatre, culture and social engagement. A beautiful example of Krakti Famiri—strength passed down from generation to generation.
